All the information on these pages are from the time of 911
and the War in
Afghanistan.
This information is a snapshot back in time of the events of that era.
The generous spirit of the American people has fostered a great and
long-standing tradition of service. Across the country groups large
and small are mobilizing concerned citizens to improve lives and
strengthen the civic fabric that holds our communities together.
The USA Freedom Corps, through its participating agencies and
programs-- the newly created Citizen Corps, AmeriCorps, Senior Corps,
and the Peace Corps-- will work with local officials and community
groups to offer expanded service opportunities for Americans at home
and abroad. Find more
information and get
involved.
My call tonight is for every American to commit at least two years -- 4,000
hours over the rest of your lifetime -- to the service of your neighbors and
your nation. (Applause.) Many are already serving, and I thank you.
If you aren't sure how to help, I've got a good place to start. To
sustain and extend the best that has emerged in America, I invite you to join
the new USA Freedom Corps. The Freedom Corps will focus on three areas of
need: responding in case of crisis at home; rebuilding our communities;
and extending American compassion throughout the world.
One purpose of the USA Freedom Corps will be homeland security. America needs
retired doctors and nurses who can be mobilized in major emergencies; volunteers
to help police and fire departments; transportation and utility workers
well-trained in spotting danger.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Northern Alliance forces
massacred some 100 Taliban recruits they found hiding in a school in
Mazar-i-Sharif, U.N. officials said Tuesday.
“Today in Mazar we’ve had several sources that have
corroborated that over 100 Taliban troops who were young recruits hiding in a
school were killed by Northern Alliance Saturday,” said Stephanie Bunker, a
U.N. spokeswoman in Islamabad.
Bunker said U.N. offices in Islamabad also had reports from
Mazar-i-Sharif of ongoing fighting in the city as well as “punitive action”
and looting.
Bunker said “small-scale” looting had also taken place in
Kabul, where troops from the Taliban militia fled overnight and left the city
open to opposition forces.
“Contacts in Kabul say under the current circumstances it’s
difficult to know who has been responsible,” Bunker said. “Although the
Taliban seemed to have left the city last night, there was still some shooting
in areas of the city in the morning which seemed at last report this afternoon
to have died down now.”
“As of mid afternoon, special forces of the Northern Alliance
had entered the city and are posted at intersections,” Bunker added.
“Apparently efforts are being made to keep the situation under control. Guards
are being assigned to protect United Nations premises. It also appears that in
some areas of the city people in neighborhoods are organizing themselves to try
to protect themselves and their properties.”
Bunker stressed that the situation on the ground in Kabul and
Mazar-i-Sharif was changing rapidly and that information remained sketchy.
In Islamabad, the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, Mullah Abdul
Salaam Zaeef, left the city for Kandahar, the Taliban stronghold in southern
Afghanistan, abandoning the militia’s last diplomatic mission in the world.
Khalid Khawaja, a longtime associate of suspected terrorist
mastermind Osama bin Laden with close ties to the Taliban, said Zaeef had joined
other Taliban leaders in Kandahar, where they planned to remain despite Northern
Alliance advances.
“They don’t have to leave Kandahar,” said Khawaja, who
stays in touch with Taliban leadership via radio from his home in Islamabad.
Khawaja said the Taliban believed that the Northern Alliance
forces were stretched too thin to mount an assault on Kandahar after taking
Mazar-i-Sharif and Kabul in a lightening sweep over northern Afghanistan that
began Friday.
Despite the losses, Khawaja said Taliban troops remained upbeat,
planning a strategy to hold onto Kandahar and, if that fails, to take up
positions in the mountainous terrain outside the cities.
“Spirits are so high you can’t imagine,” said Khawaja, who
claimed that the Taliban were receiving up to 400 new volunteers a day from
areas along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
The Taliban embassy in Islamabad was not empty, despite
Zaeef’s absence. A few officials who refused to talk to reporters were at
work, but the normally crowded grounds had many fewer people than usual. The
status of the mission in terms of official relations with Pakistan, the only
country in the world that still recognizes the Taliban as Afghanistan’s
government, remained unclear.
“There is no alternative government established in Afghanistan
as yet,” said Aziz Ahmed Khan, a spokesman for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry.
“The situation is still fluid. We will decide about that when the situation
clears a little bit.”
Khan renewed calls on the Northern Alliance to stay out of the
city until a permanent government can be negotiated among the warring factions.
But in previous statements, Khan said Pakistan would recognize whatever force
controlled Kabul and the majority of Afghanistan as a government.

What
to Do w/NYC rubble
Best idea I've heard in a long time.
GOOD IDEA!!
All
of the rubble from New York... all the huge blocks of
concrete and steel, the old busted up computers, refrigerators, hot
waterheaters, air conditioners, fire trucks, Lazyboy recliners, broken
glass, etc., should be shoveled into C130's and C5A's, flown over Iraq and
Afghanistan and dropped from 32,000 feet. An old Coldspot can do a heck of a lot
of damage from 5 miles up! With each assault we can drop pamphlets:
"Greetings,
from the 110th floor of the World Trade Center". The next day it
could be from the 109th floor... Then the 109th floor, the 108th, etc.,
etc.
After 110 days of this, I can't imagine much left standing on the ground.
Can't you just see the headlines : "WORLD TRADE CENTER STRIKES
BACK!" What wonderful irony this would be and think how much
money we wouldn't have to spend on
new bombs or missiles! ... not to mention the 100-million tons
diverted from the New York City landfill...

Let us all take a moment of silence and
pray for those who carry the flag of freedom into harm's way. We fight side by
side with all those that would say, terror will not, and cannot be allowed to
prevail. You have shed both tears and blood with us. I applaud your courage and
willingness to take that step forward and heed the call. Know that you are in
our hearts and prayers in these difficult days and those to come.

We'll go forward from this moment It's my job to have something to say.
They pay me to provide words that help make sense of that which
troubles the American soul. But in this moment of airless shock when hot
tears sting disbelieving eyes, the only thing I can find to say, the only
words that seem to fit, must be addressed to the unknown author of this
suffering.
You monster. You beast. You unspeakable bastard.
What lesson did you hope to teach us by your coward's attack on our
World Trade Center, our Pentagon, us?
What was it you hoped we would learn? Whatever it was, please know that
you failed.
Did you want us to respect your cause? You just damned your cause.
Did you want to make us fear? You just steeled our resolve.
Did you want to tear us apart? You just brought us together.
Let me tell you about my people. We are a vast and quarrelsome family,
a family rent by racial, social, political and class division, but a family
nonetheless. We're frivolous, yes, capable of expending tremendous emotional
energy on pop cultural minutiae -- a singer's revealing dress, a ball
team's misfortune, a cartoon mouse. We're wealthy, too, spoiled by the ready
availability of trinkets and material goods, and maybe because of that, we
walk through life with a certain sense of blithe entitlement. We are
fundamentally decent, though -- peace-loving and compassionate. We struggle
to
know the right thing and to do it. And we are, the overwhelming majority of
us,
people of faith, believers in a just and loving God.
Some people -- you, perhaps -- think that any or all of this makes us weak.
You're mistaken. We are not weak. Indeed, we are strong in ways that cannot
be
measured by arsenals.
IN PAIN
Yes, we're in pain now. We are in mourning and we are in shock. We're still
grappling
with the unreality of the awful thing you did, still working to make
ourselves
understand that this isn't a special effect from some Hollywood blockbuster,
isn't the
plot development from a Tom Clancy novel. Both in terms of the awful scope
of their
ambition and the probable final death toll, your attacks are likely to go
down as the
worst acts of terrorism in the history of the United States and, probably,
the history
of the world. You've bloodied us as we have never been bloodied before.
But there's a gulf of difference between making us bloody and making us
fall. This is
the lesson Japan was taught to its bitter sorrow the last time anyone hit us
this hard,
the last time anyone brought us such abrupt and monumental pain. When
roused, we are
righteous in our outrage, terrible in our force. When provoked by this level
of
barbarism, we will bear any suffering, pay any cost, go to any length, in
the pursuit
of justice.
I tell you this without fear of contradiction. I know my people, as you, I
think,
do not. What I know reassures me. It also causes me to tremble with dread of
the future.
In the days to come, there will be recrimination and accusation, fingers
pointing to
determine whose failure allowed this to happen and what can be done to
prevent it
from happening again. There will be heightened security, misguided talk of
revoking
basic freedoms. We'll go forward from this moment sobered, chastened, sad.
But
determined, too. Unimaginably determined.
THE STEEL IN US
You see, the steel in us is not always readily apparent. That aspect of our
character
is seldom understood by people who don't know us well. On this day, the
family's
bickering is put on hold.
As Americans we will weep, as Americans we will mourn, and as Americans, we
will rise
in defense of all that we cherish.
So I ask again: What was it you hoped to teach us? It occurs to me that
maybe you just
wanted us to know the depths of your hatred. If that's the case, consider
the message
received. And take this message in exchange: You don't know my people. You
don't know
what we're capable of. You don't know what you just started.
But you're about to learn.
T'S ALL PREY FOR THE
VICTIMS, OUR PRESIDENT, OUR NATION, AND OUR FREEDOM.
Join in a mounting effort to have Americans fly the
American flag and turn their front porch lights on
tonight in a statement of American solidarity.
Nice, patriotic thought. If the word gets out far
enough, the terrorists will get the message, "Our
light and our faith have not been extinguished."
I AM THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up and see me.
I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners,
my head is a little higher,
my colors a little truer.
I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped - I am saluted.
I am loved - I am revered.
I am respected -- and I am feared.
I have fought in every battle of every war
for more then 200 years.
I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg,
Shiloh and Appomattox.
I was there at San Juan Hill,
the trenches of France,
in the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome
and the beaches of Normandy, Guam, Okinawa.
The people of Korea, Vietnam and Kuwait
know me as a banner of freedom.
I was there.
I led my troops,
I was dirty, battle worn and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me
And I was proud.
I have been burned, torn and trampled
on the streets of countries I have helped set free.
It does not hurt, for I am invincible.
I have slipped the bonds of Earth
and stood watch over the uncharted frontiers of space
from my vantage point on the moon.
I have borne silent witness
to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.
When I am torn into strips and used as bandages
for my wounded comrades on the battlefield,
When I am flown at half-mast to honor my countryman,
when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving parent
at the grave of their fallen son or daughter,
or in the arms of a child or spouse who will have to
go on without one who gave their life in a national
disaster to save the life of another, as so many did
at the Pentagon or the World Trade Center Towers on 9/11/01.

All of us are asking
ourselves "What can we do to help in the face of this terrible
tragedy?" We wish to share with you two avenues of assistance
where you as an individual can contribute directly to disaster relief
and financial assistance efforts in this time of need:
American Red Cross
FEMA - Federal Emergency Management Agency
News releases from each organization requesting assistance are
provided below.
Reflection
The hallmark of America is our ability to continue to press on in
times of adversity and tragedy with faith and the resolve that out of
our challenges will come our triumphs.
Our finest triumph is the triumph of the American spirit that leads us
individually to step forward with prayers, compassion and assistance
in times of need. Our history is witness to this.
May God bless our America and sustain our spirit. #1 American Red Cross
World Trade Center, Pentagon and Pittsburgh Tragedies
The American Red Cross has immediately responded to the explosions at
the World Trade Center in New York City and in the Pentagon and on the
National Mall in Washington, D.C. that occurred early in the morning
on September 11, 2001. The Red Cross has activated its Aviation
Incident Response (AIR) Team to respond in New York City and trained
disaster workers from the American Red Cross are providing relief in
the affected areas.
80,000 blood donations in the American Red Cross blood inventory are
ready to ship to affected areas and will ensure that patients' lives
are saved. In the wake of these traumatic events lies a wide path of
catastrophic physical and psychological destruction in which countless
victims will require assistance. In addition to meeting the physical
needs of the affected regions, the American Red Cross will be
providing crisis mental health counseling.
"The American Red Cross is doing everything we can to ensure the
immediate availability of the safest possible blood," said Dr.
Bernadine Healy, president and CEO of the American Red Cross. "We
are also dispatching hundreds of trained disaster workers and mental
health counselors to New York, Washington D.C. and elsewhere,"
she added.
The fastest and most effective way to help the victims of this
disaster is through cash and blood donations, which allow for the best
use of resources. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made
possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American
people.
To make a blood donation, please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or
contact your local blood service organization. To help the victims of
this and other disasters through a financial contribution, call 1-800-
HELP-NOW to make a credit card donation or Internet users can make a
secure online credit card contribution by clicking here http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html.
You can also mail a donation to the American Red Cross, designating
"Disaster Relief Fund" on the memo line of the check, at the
American Red Cross, PO Box 37243 Washington DC 20013.
#2 FEMA Suggests
Donation Avenues To Help Victims
Washington, D.C. ...Updated September 11, 2001
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is urging those
interested in helping victims of the apparent terrorist events to give
blood or cash donations. Those interested in giving blood should call
the American Red Cross blood donation hotline, at 1-800-448-3543.
The American Red Cross can accept cash donations through 1-800-HELP
NOW, and the Salvation Army can accept financial contributions
through 1-800-SAL ARMY. Persons who wish to donate their
services should contact their local American Red Cross office. FEMA
does not accept donations, but works closely with volunteer agencies
that provide a wide variety of services after emergencies, including
childcare, crisis counseling, sheltering and food. For more
information about voluntary organizations active in disasters, go to www.nvoad.org

America: The Good Neighbor.
Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable
editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television
commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed
in the Congressional Record:
"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most
generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany,
Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris
of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other
billions in debts. None of these
countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United
States.
When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who
propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets
of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it
is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American
communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan
and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now
newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering
Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating
over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does
any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing
Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't
they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American
Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or
woman on the moon?
You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios.
You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.
You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once,
but several times - and safely home again.
You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window
for everybody to look at.
Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our
streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting
American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.
When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking Down through age,
it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the
New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still
broke.
I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people
in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the
Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San
Francisco earthquake.
Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of
hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag
high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that
are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of
those."
Stand proud, America!

May God bless you and your
loved ones.
Our country is once
again called upon to protect freedom.
We've all listened to
the radio, read the papers, seen the interviews,
heard the analysts, and watched the terrible scenes in horror and asked,
"Why?"
We will probably never know why something like this happens.
Maybe our enemies just want to show us how bad they hate us.
Maybe they think they can get away with something like this.
If so, that's where they are wrong. Dead wrong.
You will not find cowardice in this country.
What you will find is heroism,
the kind of heroism that cannot be measured.
The passengers on the United Flight 93 sacrificed their own
lives
to save the lives of other Americans.
The policemen, the
firemen, neighbors and strangers alike,
sacrificing unafraid to help fellow Americans during this disastrous time
demonstrates the caliber and fiber of the people of this country.
Watching this from afar
I’m sure you will agree
that you have experienced two feelings.
The first is helplessness, and the second is pride.
As Americans we will weep, as Americans we will mourn,
and as Americans, we will rise in defense of all that we cherish.
Right now we wait. We
wait as a whole and we wait for direction.
Be assured that we will arrive, and out of the ashes of
New York, Washi
